Patient Participation Group (PPG)

At Hanley Primary Care Centre, we believe in putting our patients at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we’re excited to invite you to be part of our Patient Participation Group (PPG). Our PPG is a platform where patients and practice staff come together to collaborate, share ideas, and work towards enhancing our services and patient experience.

A Patient Participation Group (PPG) is a group of patients who work together with a medical practice (such as a GP surgery) to improve the services provided and ensure that the needs and preferences of the patient population are met. PPGs play an important role in fostering communication between patients and the practice, providing feedback, sharing ideas, and working collaboratively on initiatives to enhance patient care.

Key Functions of a PPG:
1. Patient Feedback: PPGs collect and provide feedback from the wider patient community on the services offered by the practice. This helps the practice understand patient needs and identify areas for improvement.

2. Improvement of Services: PPGs work with the practice to implement changes and improvements. This could involve organizing health education events, improving appointment systems, or addressing accessibility issues.

3. Communication and Information Sharing: PPGs help bridge the gap between the practice and its patients by improving communication. They may produce newsletters, manage social media pages, or hold regular meetings to keep patients informed about new services, changes in the practice, or healthcare developments.

4. Representation: PPG members act as representatives of the patient community, ensuring that diverse views and concerns are brought to the attention of the practice. This helps ensure that decisions made by the practice consider the broader patient perspective.

5. Support for the Practice: PPGs can assist with practice activities, such as organizing health promotion events, supporting flu clinics, or volunteering in other ways that benefit both the practice and patients.

6. Advocacy: PPGs can play a role in advocating for patient needs at a higher level, such as within local healthcare networks, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), or Integrated Care Systems (ICS).

How PPGs Operate:
Membership: PPGs are typically made up of volunteer patients from the practice. They aim to reflect the diversity of the patient population in terms of age, ethnicity, gender, and medical needs.

Meetings: PPGs usually hold regular meetings, either in person or virtually, to discuss issues, plan activities, and provide feedback to the practice.

Collaboration with Practice Staff: PPGs work closely with practice staff, including GPs, practice managers, and nurses, to ensure that patient concerns and ideas are heard and acted upon.

Benefits of a PPG:
For Patients: PPGs provide an avenue for patients to have a say in how their healthcare is delivered, which can lead to better service quality and patient satisfaction.

For the Practice: By engaging with patients, practices can gain valuable insights into patient experiences and make improvements that enhance care quality and efficiency.

Overall, a PPG is an essential tool for ensuring that healthcare services are patient-centered, responsive, and continuously improving.
